PM Modi Lays Foundation for NLC India’s 500 MWh Battery Storage Project in Tamil Nadu
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for a 250 MW / 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Tamil Nadu, being developed by NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Limited.
The project involves an investment of approximately ₹737 crore and is expected to be commissioned by May 2027. The storage infrastructure will be distributed across three locations: Anuppankulam in Virudhunagar district, and Ottapidaram and Kayathar in Thoothukudi district.
Of the total capacity, Anuppankulam and Ottapidaram will each host 100 MW / 200 MWh, while Kayathar will accommodate 50 MW / 100 MWh.
The project aims to strengthen grid flexibility, support electricity supply during morning and evening peak-demand periods, and facilitate greater integration of renewable energy into Tamil Nadu’s power system.
This initiative marks another step towards expanding India’s energy storage infrastructure and building a more reliable, flexible and sustainable electricity grid.
