REConnect Energy, through its special purpose vehicle FlexGrid One Private Limited, has partnered with BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) to develop a 12.5 MW/25 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Shivalik Grid Substation in Malviya Nagar, Delhi.
A key feature of the project is the deployment of grid-forming inverter technology, which is described by the project partners as India’s first deployment of this advanced grid-support capability. Unlike conventional battery storage, grid-forming BESS can provide active support for voltage and frequency stability, grid resilience and grid restoration following outages.
REConnect Energy will provide its Energy Management System (EMS) capabilities for real-time monitoring, charge and discharge management, State of Charge (SoC) optimisation, dispatch scheduling, peak-demand management and grid-support functions. The EMS will integrate with the Battery Management System (BMS), Power Conversion System (PCS), SCADA and utility control systems.
The project is being supported by GIZ through the StoREin initiative, which focuses on the deployment of grid-forming inverter technology for renewable energy integration in India, with the project led by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The initiative highlights the growing role of BESS beyond energy shifting, with advanced storage systems increasingly being designed to provide grid-support and system-stability services.
