Chandigarh Power Distribution Ltd. (CPDL) has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to procure 50 MW of solar power integrated with battery energy storage. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening Chandigarh’s access to clean and reliable electricity.
Under the agreement, the solar-plus-storage project is expected to supply around 135 million units of electricity annually. The integration of battery storage will allow solar power generated during the daytime to be stored and supplied during night-time and other periods when solar generation is unavailable.
The arrangement is expected to help CPDL manage Chandigarh’s changing electricity demand more effectively while improving the reliability of renewable power supply. The project is also estimated to reduce more than 96 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
The PPA has been signed under SECI’s Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) Tranche XX. Through the ISTS network, renewable electricity generated outside Chandigarh can be transmitted to the city, enabling greater integration of renewable energy into its power supply mix.
The agreement also marks Chandigarh’s first solar power supply connected through the ISTS network, making it an important development for the city’s renewable energy adoption.
By combining solar generation with battery energy storage, the initiative demonstrates the growing role of hybrid renewable-energy solutions in providing cleaner and more dependable power while supporting the transition towards a low-carbon electricity system.
