Cygni Energy and Indus Towers have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration on energy storage solutions for telecom infrastructure in India. The partnership aims to support the growing power requirements of telecom networks through advanced Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technologies.

Under the proposed collaboration, the companies will explore establishing up to 1.5 GWh of BESS manufacturing capacity. The initiative is intended to address the evolving energy needs of telecom infrastructure while improving power reliability, energy efficiency and the sustainability of telecom operations.

The collaboration will also evaluate advanced battery technologies suited to telecom applications. With telecom towers requiring dependable backup power across diverse operating conditions, energy storage can play an important role in reducing dependence on conventional backup systems and improving overall energy management.

Cygni Energy said the initiative goes beyond battery supply and focuses on building manufacturing scale, technology capabilities and readiness to serve the changing energy requirements of telecom infrastructure. The company plans to develop capacity of up to 2 GWh and expand its product portfolio from current 100Ah solutions towards higher-capacity 314Ah systems and emerging battery technologies.

Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor at IIT Madras and Chairman of ITEL Foundation, highlighted the importance of collaboration among users, startups, manufacturers and technology institutions in advancing energy storage solutions in India.

The proposed partnership reflects the increasing convergence of India’s telecom and energy-storage sectors, with BESS emerging as a key technology for supporting reliable and more sustainable digital infrastructure.
