Vikram Solar Subsidiary Plans 7.5 GWh BESS Assembly Plant in Tamil Nadu

VSL PowerHive, a wholly owned subsidiary of Vikram Solar, has announced plans to establish a 7.5 GWh-per-year Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assembly plant in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu. The facility is expected to be inaugurated in January 2027, with commercial operations scheduled to begin in April 2027.

Spread across approximately 1.65 lakh sq. ft., the plant will initially have 7.5 GWh of annual assembly capacity, with plans to scale it to 15 GWh in subsequent phases. The facility forms part of PowerHive’s broader ambition to build 30 GWh of total battery manufacturing capacity by 2030.

The plant will manufacture LFP-based BESS solutions for utility-scale and commercial & industrial applications. Its product portfolio is expected to include 5.016 MWh and 6.25 MWh liquid-cooled BESS containers, P261 battery cabinets and renewable energy-integrated storage systems.

PowerHive also plans to enter battery cell manufacturing with a 7.5 GWh programme from 2028, moving towards an integrated domestic battery manufacturing ecosystem covering cells through complete storage systems. The company is also developing indigenous battery technologies and pursuing patent filings.

The expansion comes as India’s requirement for energy storage grows alongside increasing solar and wind capacity. According to the Central Electricity Authority, the country could require around 47 GW / 236 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2031–32.

The project strengthens Vikram Solar’s presence across the clean-energy value chain, extending its focus from solar manufacturing to domestic battery energy storage and supporting India’s push for reliable, locally manufactured clean-energy infrastructure.
