The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has mandated that inverter-level data from rooftop solar systems installed under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana must be stored exclusively on servers or cloud platforms located within India. The new requirement also mandates daily solar generation reporting to the National Portal through a standardised API.
Under the directive, inverter OEMs and manufacturers must ensure that applications, monitoring and control servers, and real-time rooftop solar data are maintained in an encrypted, secure and protected environment within India. OEMs must submit compliance confirmation to REC, with a copy to MNRE, within 30 days. Non-compliance could prevent manufacturers from installing systems under the PM Surya Ghar programme.
The move is aimed at strengthening data security, improving programme monitoring and addressing cybersecurity concerns associated with transmitting rooftop solar data to overseas servers. MNRE has also directed manufacturers to include data loggers within inverter warranty coverage.
Daily generation data will be linked to an inverter serial number or another unique identifier and transmitted through a uniform API using only the minimum required parameters. The arrangement will continue until state governments or DISCOMs establish systems to capture and supply rooftop solar generation data to the National Portal.
