Adani Power Begins Construction of ₹48,000 Crore, 3,200 MW Chapar Thermal Power Project in Assam
Adani Power has commenced construction of its 3,200 MW Chapar Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Project in Assam’s Dhubri district, marking a major planned addition to the state’s power-generation capacity.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for the project at Chapar on September 20, 2026. The project comprises four 800 MW ultra-supercritical generating units and involves an estimated investment of approximately ₹48,000 crore.
The project is being developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate (DBFOO) model, with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) serving as the power offtaker. The coal supply for the project is linked through the SHAKTI policy framework.
Commissioning will take place in phases, with the first unit targeted for December 2030. The complete 3,200 MW capacity is scheduled to be commissioned by December 2032.
The Chapar project is part of a broader ₹63,000 crore power-sector investment programme planned in Assam. The wider programme also includes around 2,700 MW of pumped-storage capacity being developed through Adani Green Energy.
The project is expected to contribute to Assam’s growing electricity requirements while supporting employment generation. It is projected to create up to 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and approximately 5,000 operational jobs once the project is commissioned.
With its large-scale generation capacity and phased commissioning schedule, the Chapar project is set to become a significant addition to Assam’s power infrastructure and form part of the state’s longer-term energy development plans.
