India Plans to Repower 25 GW of Ageing Wind Projects to Boost Renewable Energy Capacity

The Government of India is developing strategies to repower approximately 25 GW of ageing wind energy projects as part of its efforts to achieve 100 GW of installed wind power capacity by 2030.

Announcing the initiative at the 8th Windergy India 2026 conference in Chennai, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi highlighted the need to upgrade older wind installations whose equipment and components are nearing the end of their operational lives.

Repowering involves replacing older wind turbines with modern, more efficient technology to increase electricity generation from existing project sites. This approach could help India improve the utilisation of established wind resources while reducing the need to develop entirely new sites.

India currently has around 59 GW of operational wind power capacity. During FY 2025–26, the country added 6.05 GW of wind capacity, while approximately 3 GW was added between April and September 2026.

Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh are among India’s leading states in installed wind power capacity. However, the government has yet to announce the locations of the identified projects or the detailed implementation framework for the proposed repowering programme.

The initiative could provide fresh opportunities for wind turbine manufacturers, project developers and renewable energy investors while supporting India’s long-term clean energy ambitions.

Modernising ageing wind installations will be an important part of strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure and advancing its transition towards a cleaner energy future.
