Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has acquired 100% of Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited, the project SPV for developing an inter-state transmission system to evacuate 6 GW of renewable energy from Rajasthan’s Renewable Energy Zone. The acquisition was completed on September 23, 2026, under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding route.

The project will establish 6,000 MW, ±800 kV HVDC terminals at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and South Kalamb in Maharashtra, along with augmentation of the South Kalamb substation.

Key components include:

  • Approximately 1,000-km ±800 kV HVDC bipole transmission line
  • Transmission corridor across Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra
  • 400 kV transmission lines and associated bays in Rajasthan
  • Two synchronous condenser units at Barmer-II

The project will be developed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis and is intended to facilitate large-scale renewable power evacuation from Rajasthan to the western grid.
