Telangana Invites Bids for 5,800 MW of Renewable Power
Telangana has invited tenders for the procurement of 5,800 MW of renewable power to meet rising electricity demand and strengthen the state’s long-term energy security.
The tenders have been issued by the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd. (TGREDCO) and Telangana Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (TGGENCO). The procurement programme covers solar, wind, round-the-clock renewable power and battery energy storage.
The key components include 3,000 MW of solar power integrated with a 6,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), 800 MW of wind power and 2,000 MW of renewable energy round-the-clock (RE-RTC) power.
The initiative comes as Telangana’s peak electricity demand has approached 19,900 MW, driven by industrialisation, urbanisation, data centres, electric mobility, irrigation and infrastructure development.
The solar-plus-storage capacity will be contracted for 25 years, with batteries designed to store surplus daytime solar generation and supply electricity during evening and night-time peak demand. The wind and RE-RTC procurement categories will also have 25-year contract periods.
Separately, TGGENCO will undertake tariff-based competitive bidding for a 2,000 MWh firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) battery storage system, with a 15-year procurement period.
The initiative aims to improve renewable power availability, strengthen grid reliability and reduce dependence on conventional generation and expensive short-term electricity purchases.
By combining renewable generation with energy storage, Telangana is seeking to build a more reliable and flexible electricity supply to support its growing energy needs.
