WeWork India Management is planning to develop a 10 MWp ground-mounted solar power plant in Karnataka, marking a major step in its strategy to increase the use of renewable electricity across its operations. The project is targeted for commissioning in FY27 and is part of the company’s broader goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity by March 2028.
The solar plant is expected to generate around 15–16 million units of clean electricity annually. Once operational, it is projected to increase the share of renewable electricity in WeWork India’s overall portfolio from nearly 40% currently to approximately 50%.
Nearly 80% of the plant’s electricity generation will be used to support WeWork India’s operations, including 10 centres in Bengaluru, while the remaining 20% will be utilised to support the company’s future growth. Bengaluru is WeWork India’s largest market, with 30 operational centres, and accounts for around 30% of its total electricity consumption.
The project represents a shift from renewable electricity procurement towards direct investment in renewable generation capacity. WeWork India plans to combine owned renewable generation, captive consumption and open access as part of a diversified energy sourcing strategy.
With a design life of 25 years, the solar plant is expected to provide greater visibility over electricity costs while reducing exposure to fluctuations in grid tariffs. The company also expects the project to improve operating efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint associated with its operations.
According to WeWork India Managing Director and CEO Karan Virwani, Karnataka is a strategic starting point because Bengaluru is the company’s largest market. The investment is intended to make sustainability an integral part of the company’s growth while creating greater long-term certainty around energy costs.
The 10 MWp project strengthens WeWork India’s renewable energy roadmap and represents another step towards its target of powering its operations with 100% renewable electricity by March 2028.
