Tata Power Commissions 400 kV Jalpura–Khurja Transmission Corridor to Strengthen NCR Power Grid

Tata Power has commissioned the second element of its Jalpura–Khurja Transmission Project in Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant addition to the high-voltage transmission infrastructure serving the National Capital Region (NCR) and Western Uttar Pradesh.

Developed through TP Jalpura Khurja Power Transmission Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power, the project includes a 400 kV double-circuit transmission line spanning 162 circuit kilometres (CKM), along with a 400/220 kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Jalpura.

The commissioned transmission infrastructure has a transformation capacity of 1,000 MVA and includes approximately 81 km of physical corridor per circuit. The corridor is designed to strengthen power transfer capabilities between Khurja and Jalpura, supporting electricity supply to major demand centres across the NCR and surrounding regions.

The project comes at a time when India’s electricity demand is rising due to rapid urbanisation, industrial growth, commercial development, data centres, electrification and emerging energy-intensive infrastructure. Robust transmission networks are becoming increasingly important to ensure reliable and efficient movement of electricity across regions.

The expansion of renewable energy capacity is also driving the need for stronger transmission infrastructure. As generation projects are increasingly located away from major consumption centres, transmission corridors play a critical role in evacuating power and integrating renewable electricity into the national grid.

The Jalpura–Khurja corridor reflects the growing importance of grid infrastructure in supporting India’s evolving power sector and future energy requirements.

Tata Power has stated that its transmission portfolio now stands at approximately 7,900 CKM of transmission lines operational and under execution across India, reinforcing its presence in the country’s transmission infrastructure segment.
