Union Cabinet Approves ₹5,070 Crore PM Surya Sarovar Yojana to Boost Floating Solar and BESS

New Delhi, India: The Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) with a total outlay of ₹5,070 crore, aiming to deploy 5 GW of floating solar capacity integrated with 10 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).


The scheme will utilize reservoirs and inland water bodies to expand renewable energy generation while conserving land resources. The initiative is also expected to improve grid stability, support domestic manufacturing, and strengthen India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.


The ambitious programme is projected to accelerate the growth of India’s floating solar sector, create thousands of green jobs, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute significantly to the country’s clean energy and energy transition goals.
