Tata Power has floated a tender for the procurement of 50 MW/100 MWh of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity to support its Mumbai electricity distribution network.
The tender is structured for the procurement of BESS power for a 15-year period through a tariff-based competitive bidding process, according to currently available tender listings. The project represents another step in Tata Power’s broader efforts to integrate energy storage into Mumbai’s distribution infrastructure.
The proposed two-hour energy storage system is expected to support grid flexibility, manage peak demand and enable better integration of renewable energy. Battery storage can also provide fast-response support to distribution networks, helping improve reliability and power-system resilience.
Tata Power has already been advancing large-scale battery storage deployment in Mumbai. In April 2025, the company announced plans to install a 100 MW BESS across 10 strategic locations, following approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission, with applications including grid reliability, frequency regulation, voltage support and renewable-energy integration.
The latest 50 MW/100 MWh tender further underlines the growing importance of utility-scale and distribution-level energy storage as Mumbai’s power network prepares for increasing renewable-energy penetration and changing demand patterns.
