NTPC Mining Limited (NML) has invited Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for developing a cumulative 50 MWp DC ground-mounted solar PV capacity at its coal mining operations in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model.
The initiative marks another step toward integrating renewable energy into India’s mining sector. Under the proposed model, selected developers will be responsible for developing and operating the solar projects, while the generated power will support NTPC Mining’s energy requirements.
The projects are planned across two locations associated with NTPC Mining’s operations. The EOI seeks participation from renewable energy developers capable of taking up the development of ground-mounted solar PV projects and providing long-term operational support.
According to the available tender information, the proposed capacity totals 50 MWp (DC), equivalent to around 40 MW AC. The projects are expected to operate under a long-term arrangement, with the developer responsible for financing, construction and operation of the solar assets.
The move is significant as India’s coal-mining companies increasingly explore renewable energy to reduce their carbon footprint and improve the sustainability of mining operations. Solar power can also help utilise available land and support more efficient energy management at mining sites.
For NTPC Mining, the proposed projects represent an opportunity to diversify its energy mix while contributing to NTPC’s broader renewable energy expansion strategy.
The initiative also highlights the growing role of the RESCO model in India’s solar market, allowing large industrial and public-sector organisations to adopt renewable power without necessarily developing and owning the entire solar asset themselves.
